Islamabad, Oct 11: Japanese organisation Nihon Hidankyo wins Nobel Peace Prize 2024
The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.”
“The Norwegian Nobel Committee said that this grassroots movement of Hibakusha, or survivors of the atomic bombs that struck Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is receiving the peace prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.”
The only Nobel prize that was not given out in Stockholm was given out in Oslo.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee chair in Oslo, Jorgen Watne Friedens, presented the group with the award “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.” The group was founded in 1956.
The co-head of the group expressed surprise at winning the award.
“Never did I dream this could happen,” Toshiyuki Mimaki told reporters in Tokyo with tears in his eyes.
The Nobel committee expressed alarm that the international “nuclear taboo” that developed in response to the atomic bomb attacks of August 1945 was “under pressure”.
Concerns about the possibility of nuclear war have lately increased due to the conflict in Ukraine, especially in light of Russia’s declaration that it will be reviewing its nuclear weapons doctrine.
The prize for this year emphasizes how important it is to maintain the nuclear taboo. Additionally, all of us—especially the nuclear powers—have a duty, Frydnes told reporters.
The sole female recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature this year, South Korean writer Han Kang, received the award on Thursday for her investigation into the relationship between historical occurrences and psychological and physical suffering.
The economics prize will conclude the Nobel season on Monday.
A diploma, a gold medal, and a $1 million prize money make up the Nobel Prizes. On December 10, the anniversary of physicist and Nobel Prize originator Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896, they will be presented during ceremonies in Stockholm and Oslo.
